Faculty of Information and Communication Technology Leads Sustainable Initiative, Winning Top Prize in UP-GREEN 2023 Contest

Phayao University Unveils Innovative ‘Used Cooking Oil for New Oil’ Exchange Program
On September 3, 2023, the Faculty of Information and Communication Technology at Phayao University launched an innovative program, the “Used Cooking Oil Bank,” at the Kad Ratchawong, Tree Lover’s Road, Wiang Subdistrict, Muang District, Phayao Province. This pioneering project, led by Assistant Professor Dr. Nakarin Chaikeaw, Vice-Dean for Student Quality, and Assistant Professor Dr. Bowornsak Srisangsitthisanti, Assistant Dean for Special Affairs, aims to transform used cooking oil into biodiesel and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) following the BCG and SDGs economic models.
The program, a collaborative effort with Thanachok Vegetable Oil (2012) Company and Doi Noi Farm, focuses on educating the public and university students about responsible waste management and environmental sustainability. It encourages community participation by offering a unique exchange: one liter of used cooking oil can be traded for a 250 ml bottle of new oil, and three liters for a one-liter bottle. This initiative not only addresses the disposal of used cooking oil but also contributes to the production of biodiesel and SAF, enhancing environmental management in Phayao Province.

In another significant achievement, the student club of the Faculty of ICT won the first prize in the SHOW & SHARE UP-GREEN 2023 contest on September 12, 2023, for their outstanding presentation of the “Used Cooking Oil for New Oil” Bank project. The UP-GREEN activity, organized by the Phayao University’s Buildings and Grounds Department, promotes green university initiatives following the UI Green criteria, fostering a sustainable and environmentally conscious campus. The project’s victory, along with a prize of 5,000 baht, underscores the commitment of Phayao University’s students and staff to environmental stewardship and sustainable development.
